Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Nano Banana 4, answered in plain language.
What is Nano Banana 4?
Nano Banana 4 is the community nickname for the fourth generation of Google's Gemini image generation and editing model. The name "Nano Banana" started as the anonymous codename the model used on testing leaderboards and stuck after it went viral. Generation 4 focuses on sharper detail, better prompt adherence, consistent characters across images and reliable text rendering.
How can I use Nano Banana 4?
You can use it through the Gemini app (web and mobile), Google AI Studio, or programmatically via the Gemini API. In the Gemini app simply choose the image generation option and type your prompt. Developers can call the model through Google AI Studio with an API key.
Is Nano Banana 4 free?
There is a free tier with a daily limit of image generations in the Gemini app. Paid Google AI subscriptions raise the limits significantly and unlock the highest quality settings. API usage is billed per image.
Do generated images have a watermark?
All images generated by the model include an invisible SynthID watermark that identifies them as AI-generated. Images created in the consumer Gemini app may also carry a small visible watermark. The invisible watermark does not affect image quality.
Can I use the images commercially?
Google's generative AI terms generally allow you to use the images you generate, including for commercial purposes, provided you comply with the usage policies. You are responsible for making sure your prompts and outputs don't infringe third-party rights (trademarks, celebrity likeness, copyrighted characters). Always review the current terms before commercial use.
How does it compare to Midjourney and DALL-E?
Nano Banana 4's biggest advantages are conversational editing of existing photos, character consistency across generations, and text rendering. Midjourney still has a distinctive artistic aesthetic many creators prefer, while DALL-E integrates tightly with ChatGPT. For photo editing and product work, Nano Banana 4 is currently the strongest option. See our full comparison guide for details.
What resolutions and aspect ratios are supported?
The model supports common aspect ratios including 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3 and 3:4, with output up to 4K resolution on the highest quality settings. Specify the aspect ratio directly in your prompt, e.g. "vertical 9:16 poster".
Is it safe to upload my personal photos?
Uploaded photos are processed according to Google's privacy policy. If you are privacy-conscious, avoid uploading photos of other people without consent, review your Gemini activity settings, and consider turning off training data contribution in your account settings.
Why is it called "Nano Banana"?
Before its official announcement, the model appeared anonymously on a popular AI testing arena under the codename "nano-banana". It topped the leaderboard, went viral, and the quirky name became more famous than the official one β so the community kept it for every following generation.
Should I write prompts in English or Chinese?
The model understands both well, but English prompts are more predictable for fine-grained style keywords (lens names, lighting terms, art styles) because most of its training data for those concepts is English. A good workflow: describe the scene in your native language, then keep technical keywords in English.
